Sample Lesson 1: PEMDAS (Overview)
Step One: Overview of PEMDAS
PEMDAS is a mnemonic device used to remember the order of operations in mathematics. It stands for:
-
Parentheses
-
Exponents
-
Multiplication and Division (from left to right)
-
Addition and Subtraction (from left to right)

This means that when solving a math problem, you should perform operations in this order. For example, in the expression 2 * (3 + 4) - 5, you would first calculate the expression within the parentheses (3 + 4 = 7), then multiply (2 * 7 = 14), and finally subtract (14 - 5 = 9).
Step Two: Watch the video and take notes.
Ready to conquer this concept? Buckle up! This 5-minute presentation includes clear video explanations on every slide.

Remember, you're in the driver's seat! Feel free to pause, rewind, and take notes at your own pace. Math builds on itself, so mastering each step is key to unlocking the next. Let's dive in!

Step Three: Practice with the online activity.
Step Four: Independent Work
Ready to unlock your math superpower? Grab a pencil and paper - it's time to tackle these problems by hand! Why? Because working them out yourself strengthens your number sense, which is your math intuition. The better your number sense, the smoother sailing you'll have with calculations, estimating, and conquering any math problem that comes your way! So, let's put those pencils to the test!
Step Five: Quiz
-
This video walks through our PEMDAS quiz. It shows the problems and explains how they align with the lesson.
-
The quiz does not have negative numbers or fractions because the lesson didn't include those concepts.
-
Most courses will throw in surprises during tests and quizzes. We don't do that to encourage learning and reward effort. Negative numbers and fractions will come later and be tested only after they are introduced.
